Herbal Prepartion and Safety Chart
Cancer Herbal Treatments September 22nd, 2010
The proper preparation of herbs is necessary to get the maximum medicinal benefit. Once you decide the best method of use and the safety factors surrounding the natural herbs you have chosen for your treatment, you are well on your way to better health!
How to Prepare and Use Dried and Fresh Herbs
1. Use only stainless steel, glass (Pyrex) or earthenware pots for preparation. Do not use aluminum; it is poisonous!
2. Use approximately one teaspoon of dry herb for every cup of water (fresh herbs may need more than one teaspoon).
3. Use honey, maple syrup, or raw sugar if you want to sweeten. Refrain from using white sugar.
DEFINITIONS:
INFUSION- The most common way of preparing herbs. The usual amount is a teaspoon of leaves, blossoms or flowers to a cup of boiling water. The water is poured over the herb; then steeped for 3 to 5 minutes. Strain before using. Honey or Maple Syrup may be added to taste.
DECOCTION- To extract the deeper essences from harder or coarser herbs such as stems, bark, and roots. The herbs are usually simmered uncovered for 10 to 20 minutes until 1/3 of the water has decreased through evaporation. Strain before using.
FOMENTATION- A fomentation is an external application of herbs, generally used to treat swelling, pains, colds and flu. To prepare a fomentation, soak a towel or cloth in the desired tea, and apply the towel over the affected area as hot as can be tolerated without burning. Cover the towel with a dry flannel cloth. Repeat as needed.
POULTICE- A poultice is usually used to reduce swelling by applying a warm mass of powdered herbs directly to the skin. To prepare, add enough hot water to make a thick paste, then apply directly to the skin. Cover with a hot moist towel.
STEEP- Recommended preparation for fresh herbs. Heat herb in water until it reaches a full boil. Turn down heat, let cool, strain, and drink.
How to Use this Safety Guide
This helpful safety guide will provide useful information on the use of herbs and herbal products. Prior to the use of herbal remedies, we strongly recommend that you educate yourself on their proper use. This list will be updated periodically and will soon have a simplified navigational feature.
There are two charts below. The first is a list containing a safety number along with its safety description. Immediately following, is a list of herbs along with a designated safety guideline number. Just refer to the first chart when viewing the safety number on the herb chart.

Hi, Neat post. There is a problem with your web site in internet explorer, would test this… IE still is the market leader and a big portion of people will miss your wonderful writing because of this problem.
March 6th, 2011 at 7:32 pm
Byod, yes, explorer doesn't display the site very well for me either, but Firefox, Opera and Chrome display it beautifully!
Oh, by the way, my stats are telling me that Firefox outnumbers Explorer for Browsers used by visitors 3 to1, so Explorer is NOT the market leader over here! If I were you, I'd switch!
